About Ms. ByersI love science, going hiking with my dog, spending time with friends and family, watching movies, and being your science teacher! This will be my fourth year in Durham Public Schools. I am so excited to be your biology teacher, and to hopefully get you excited about Biology!
Courses taught: Honors Biology, Biology, ESL Biology, Honors Human Anatomy and Physiology (elective), and Honors/Standard Earth and Environmental Science. |
Where did I go to school?I am a proud graduate of Virginia Tech where I earned my Bachelor of Science degrees in Biology and Psychology.
Afterward, I became a proud blue devil for graduate school, where I earned my Master of the Arts in Teaching (Specialization in Secondary Science) from Duke University. Please ask me about applying to college, financial aid, or the universities I attended should you be interested! I was a first generation college student who needed scholarships to attend college, so I am especially helpful for guidance in applying for scholarships and navigating the application process. |
What's your philosophy about teaching science?I could write a very long paper on this topic (and I have!). In short, I believe in giving students the support they need to feel successful as scientists and as citizens. It is my hope to provide genuine, hands-on experiences that require students to interact and engage with the material and relate it to their own lives and the world they will soon be adults in! Science is a way of approaching and learning about the world around you, and I hope students exit my class with a greater understanding not just of the "stuff" we learn, but how scientists do the work to learn that "stuff"!
